Texas-based Atlas Technical Consultants acquires Piedmont Geotechnical of Atlanta

Atlas Technical Consultants recently picked a peach when it acquired Atlanta-based Piedmont Geotechnical Consultants, a move that continues Atlas’ expansion into infrastructure engineering, program management, and the construction inspection and testing industry. Zweig Group, a full-service AEC consulting firm based in Fayetteville, Arkansas, represented selling firm Piedmont. Brenden Sherrer, an M&A consultant with Zweig Group and the firm’s project lead on the Atlas-Piedmont deal, sees big upside for the combined firms. “Piedmont has continued to build and grow the firm by focusing on its people, its clients, and delivering high-quality projects in Georgia and throughout the Southeast,” Sherrer said. “Joining Atlas will further the commitment to Piedmont’s employees, expand client reach, and give it the resources it needs

to maintain its standards of project excellence. The future is very bright under the guidance of Atlas CEO L. Joe Boyer, and Atlas will benefit from the addition of Piedmont founder and President Mike Ballard and the Piedmont team.” With the addition of Piedmont, the combined company has nearly 1,200 employees across 11 states located in more than 30 office locations, including Atlanta, San Francisco, Houston, Dallas, Austin, Salt Lake City, Boise, Portland, and Honolulu. The acquisition complements Atlas’ geotechnical engineering market share, and adds to the company’s established influence in construction and program management. Atlas, ranked 17th among Engineering News-Record’s Top 100 construction management firms, provides public- and private-sector clients with comprehensive support in managing small- and large-scale infrastructure improvement programs through engineering, design, program development/management, land acquisition and project control services, as well as construction engineering and inspection and materials testing. “We believe in the need to build an organization that can keep people safe and connected with infrastructure that lasts for generations,” Boyer said. “The acquisition of Piedmont Geotechnical adds to our portfolio, is a match with our core values, and enhances our ability to become a leader in this industry.” Piedmont Geotechnical was founded in 1992 and is a geotechnical engineering, materials testing and environmental consulting firm with over 50 employees servicing Georgia and the Southeast. “I am excited for us to join the Atlas team and to add to the wealth of experience and expertise that is being built there,” Ballard said.
