Press Release: May 2, 2011 FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (May 2, 2011) – Industry leader Daniel A. Cuoco will become the editor of Structural Engineer (formerly Structural Engineering & Design), effective June 1, 2011. The magazine is part of ZweigWhite, a multi-faceted management consulting, investment banking, publishing and education firm specialized in the A/E/P and environmental consulting industry. Cuoco is president and CEO of Thornton Tomasetti, Inc., a 550-person international engineering and design firm. Cuoco ends his duties as president and CEO on May 12 and officially retires from a 40-year career with the firm in June. “Although I will still have a relationship with Thornton Tomasetti as a consultant, my new association with Structural Engineer magazine will provide me with an added opportunity to continue contributing to our profession,” Cuoco says. ZweigWhite founder and CEO Mark Zweig explains that the choice to hire Cuoco became clear during a conversation with another industry leader. “I was talking to Charlie Thornton about our acquiring the magazine,” Zweig says. “I asked him for input on a new editor for Structural Engineer magazine and he suggested I talk to Dan. I had met Dan some years ago in the course of consulting with Thornton Tomasetti and knew immediately we’d be lucky to get a guy with the qualifications he has as our editor. “Dan is a world renowned structural engineer. Who could be better?” Zweig says. In his new role, Cuoco will set the editorial direction of Structural Engineer, which as part of a redesign will prominently feature the “unsung heroes” of the A/E/P and environmental consulting professions: structural engineers. Cuoco has extensive experience in the design of major projects, such as long-span structures, high-rise buildings, hotels, industrial buildings, airport structures, schools, parking structures, hospitals, and special structures. He also has been personally involved with the forensic investigation of numerous building failures, ranging from field reconnaissance to collapse analysis to expert testimony services. In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Cuoco led the World Trade Center Structural Engineering Disaster Response Team. This work included assessment of buildings in the immediate collapse area, development of temporary stabilization and demolition procedures, design of grillages and analysis of existing structures to support construction equipment, coordination of the survey monitoring of existing damaged structures, and inspection of approximately 400 buildings in the area surrounding the collapse site. Cuoco holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from the City College of New York, a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from New York University, and a Master of Business Administration degree in Management from Adelphi University. In 1980, he was cited as one of Engineering News-Record’s “Those Who Made Marks.” Cuoco has authored numerous technical papers, and has lectured extensively at universities and engineering conferences in the United States and abroad. He is a registered professional engineer in eight states. Cuoco is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and serves on its Committee on Special Structures. He also is a member of the American Concrete Institute and its Strategic Development Council, the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering, the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures, the American Iron and Steel Institute’s Committee on Specifications for Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members, and the Construction Industry Round Table. In addition, Cuoco serves on the Board of Directors of the Salvadori Center, a nonprofit organization focused on improving the education of children in math and science, and on the Board of Governors of the Thornton Tomasetti Foundation, which supports educational and philanthropic activities related to the building design professions.
