What happens without a strategic plan?

Strategic planning helps firms move beyond daily demands and take control of where the business is headed.

There have been many articles written in The Zweig Letter about how creating an effective strategic plan has a positive effect on the entire firm. But let’s say you and your partners are too busy to conduct strategic planning. You are too preoccupied with managing clients, leading your employees, working on projects, trying to bring in new work, solving people problems, or just focusing on what the day throws at you. It creates firmwide blindness.

If your leadership does not know where the firm is headed, why would employees want to stay and grow with the firm? What is the purpose of your enterprise? A ship without a north star drifts. A firm without a strategic plan cannot use the “wind” to its advantage, because it does not even know what direction it needs to go in. It diminishes the whole reason for being in business.

This also causes a lack of cohesiveness from the principals’ and employees’ perspective. How can you row in the same direction if no one knows what the firm’s “true north” really is? Without a clear vision, direction, and understanding of what the promised land is, people get tired and move on to better opportunities.

Going through a strategic plan is both an internal and external exercise. It can provide insights through employee and client surveys. It can take stock and adjust based on the performance of the firm’s marketing, HR, IT, and financial functions. But what happens when you don’t do this? Your processes and culture get weaker. All of this operational and cultural baggage drags on your firm and prevents it from making a significant impact across the business.

This issue also limits your ability to address current problems in ways that improve future outcomes. If you do not shed light on the practices that are not working and on what behaviors have been a burden, then you will create a time bomb – one that goes off when everything else is going wrong. The strategic plan is crucial in allowing you to take a step back and evaluate through an objective lens without succumbing to internal or external pressures.

A strategic plan not only sets you apart from your competitors, but also energizes everyone in your firm. It allows your people to grow. It allows your leadership team to better understand how to manage both people and the business. That isn’t to say the daily needs of the firm are not necessary for the firm to operate and run smoothly, but channeling those daily needs through the lens of a strategic plan gives them a purpose and a plan. This allows you and your people to take control of the direction of the firm.

Addressing the present is a must, but intentionally directing the future of your firm through a strategic plan is key to building a more successful business. I will leave it up to you: Would you rather work for a company that has a strategic plan or one that is operating in the dark?
